Be Not A Banyan Tree

Oh mortal,
Do not become a banyan tree
Permit new plants also to flourish;
You may be great,
Firm and strong,
Therefore unshakeable,
Not letting anyone near,
Thus standing for ages.

If you take up the whole life energy,
What would be the fate of the plants nearby?
They would die an untimely death
Solely on your account
Since no plant can survive
Under your shade.
Your greatness does not lie in
Not letting anything grow;
Even if you do not provide shade,
Some other tree will do so,
Will not deprive them of life.
Like you do.

Ponder deeply
That because other plants exist,
Your existence is great;
If smallness is not present,
Where is the grandeur in bigness?
Without night, what is day?
What is greatness, which benefits none?
It becomes a load on the earth
And earth wishes to be liberated
From such a burden.

वटवृक्ष मत बनो

 हे मानव !
 तुम वटवृक्ष मत बनो,
 नई पौध को भी उगने दो,
 माना कि तुम महान हो,
 सुदृढ़ शक्तिमान हो,
 इसलिए जमकर डटे हो,
 नहीं फटकने देते किसी को,
 इसलिए सदियों तक खड़े हो।
  पूरी जीवन-ऊर्जा अगर तुम ही ले लोगे,
  तो आस-पास के पौधों का क्या होगा?
   मर जायेंगे वे असमय में ही,
   वह भी तुम्हारे कारण ,
   क्योंकि तुम्हारी छाया में,
   कोई पौधा पनप नहीं सकता।
   तुम्हारी महानता इसमें नहीं
   कि तुम किसी को पनपने न दो,
   तुम अगर छाया न भी दो,
   तो कोई अन्य पेड़ छाया देगा,
   किन्तु तुम्हारी तरह,
  जीवन तो नहीं छीनेगा।
  अच्छी तरह सोच लो,
  अन्य पेड़ हैं इसलिए,
   तुम्हारा अस्तित्व महान है।
   लघुता न हो तो गुरुता का महत्व क्या?
   रात न हो तो दिन का अस्तित्व  क्या?
   सबलता अगर किसी के काम न आए?
   तो वह धरती पर बोझ बन जाती है,
   और धरती भी उसके बोझ से,
   मुक्त होना चाहती है।
